What is Business Coaching?

A simple analogy for business coaching can be taken from any sport. Every high-performing athlete or sporting team has a coach, so why not a business or business manager. No matter how expert they are at their skill or craft, they have someone who is on hand to be an objective observer, adviser and mentor.

A coach is someone who can assist the athlete to fine-tune their skills and tap into their highest levels of performance. The same principle applies to business executives who want to improve some area of their performance. The executives who choose coaching as their method of improvement include the top-level management of large corporations and owners and directors of small and mid-sized companies. TRAC Consulting's Business Coaches have worked at the highest levels in both the arenas of  "peak performance" sport and professional development coaching.

Generally, there are two types of people who seek out a professional business coach. The first is the person who is already doing very well in her/his business or professional endeavours, and who wants to identify what they are doing when at their peak, so they can duplicate that at will.

The second type is the person who wants to learn more and better skills to improve their performance, communication skills, interpersonal skills and personal contribution. This may include people who want to improve their performance in their present position, and those who have been promoted to positions of more responsibility and need to "raise the bar" with their skills delivery.

In the event of the need to change or shift the culture of a company, the best way to assist the company to make the lasting changes that are desired, is to assist in making changes in the leaders themselves – because organisations don’t transform, people do! It is this one-on-one approach to our coaching methods that is most powerful in assisting today’s leaders in positive transformation.

The case of the small to mid-sized business owner is sometimes even more unique, and fits the Business Coach model particularly well. Frequently, individuals in these positions have several circumstances that make it difficult to consult with anyone except a coach. Often, the sensitivity of their situation prevents them from finding anyone who can serve as a "sounding board" for their woes, a confidante. Their peers are often their competitors, and as such not a safe haven in which to "unburden" themselves. Family and friends have no interest in listening to them "talk about work" while at home, so there are few alternatives left for a meaningful conversation regarding the problems of the business.

This is when a Coach becomes invaluable. The Coach can maintain objectivity and from that perspective, and from personal experience, offer suggestions when appropriate. A Coach can be an impartial "ear", a confidante, and a mentor to guide the executive toward their goal. Or the Coach can be that "sounding board" that allows the executive to hear their problem spoken, and to assist them in finding his/her own solutions.

Without exaggeration, in almost every situation in modern business, a Coach would prove an extremely valuable asset for any executive or business owner wanting to improve themselves or their companies position.
